PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are a threat to public health. These contaminants have been found in public water systems across the country and in Pennsylvania. They can also be present in private wells.
Pennsylvania has just enacted a statewide drinking water limit standard for two PFAS. Forever chemicals have been contaminating public drinking water. Some areas of Pennsylvania don’t use or drink their tap water because it is so contaminated with chemicals. Commonly contaminated areas are near military bases, fire training sites, landfills, and factories.
Pennsylvania has received $75 million in funding to remove PFAS from drinking water.
Currently there is no national maximum “limit” for PFAS in water. The federal government issued a recommendation of 70 parts per trillion or lower. Pennsylvania set a new limit of 14 parts per trillion for perfluorooctanoic acid and 18 parts per trillion for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid.

What are PFAS?
So, what are PFAS? Why should you be worried about them?
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) belong to a group of thousands of human-made chemicals. These chemicals are used in everyday products such as non-stick cookware, fast food containers, waterproof cosmetics, and much more.
They’re also commonly called “forever chemicals.” Why? Because these highly toxic chemicals do not break down easily.
The effects these chemicals have on the human body are not truly known, some suggest PFAS contribute to various diseases and cancers.

How to Removes PFAS From Your Drinking Water
Traditional filtering methods are not enough to remove PFAS from your drinking water. For example, a Brita filter will not purify your water.
This is where the grant money comes in handy for smaller communities. The grant money greatly helps small public utilities get their water supply tested and treated. They often can’t afford the millions of dollars it takes to install advanced systems like reverse osmosis or nanofiltration.
This grant will help remove PFAS from highly contaminated areas – one’s closest to areas like fire training sites and military bases.
